The JEI hosted a comprehensive Orientation Programme for newly appointed Judicial Officers in Saint Lucia from 20th to 24th February2017, at the Coco Palm Resort. Over 13 newly appointed judicial officers were trained.
The orientation explored the role of a CPR Judge and focused on the following areas:
- Judge as Manager: Foundational Underpinnings
- Judge as Manager: The CPR
- Judge as Manager: Performance Standards
- Judge as Manager: Special Concerns
The recently appointed judges were also trained in the areas of judicial ethics, judicial independence, judgment writing, costs, the importance of technology in judicial process and the criminal trial process which focused on the following areas;
- Preparing for Criminal Trial – Overview
- Jury Warnings/Enquiries
- Unrepresented Defendant
The faculty was very experienced in the areas they presented on and included, the Hon. Mr. Justice Adrian Saunders, and the Hon. Mr. Justice Denys Barrow, SC both Judges from the Caribbean Court of Justice; the Hon. Mr. Justice Peter Jamadar and the Hon. Madam Justice Alice Yorke Soo-Hon, Justices of Appeal from Trinidad and Tobago; Judge Sandra Oxner from the CJEI; Professor James Raymond and the ECSC’s own Dame Janice Pereira, DBE, Chief Justice of the ECSC.
