The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) through its Judicial Education Institute (JEI), in recognition of the role that judicial officers play, in ensuring the proper administration of Justice is promoted and executed, hosted its signature event the Annual Judicial Conference for Judges and Masters of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court at Le Sport, the Body Holiday from July 27 – 28, 2017. Following the conference the ECSC also hosted a Gala Dinner on Saturday July 29, 2017 at the Sandals Grande Resort and Spa in commemoration of its 50th Anniversary.
The training ran over a period of two days, and focused on Sentencing, Criminal Case Management, Jury Directions with route to verdict, Cybercrime, Social Media Pitfalls and Interim Remedies. The training also provided an opportunity for the Judges to share best practices with a view to creating uniformity in criminal procedures throughout the nine jurisdictions.
The Official Opening Ceremony on Thursday July 27th, 2017 opened with speeches from the Hon. Lenard Spider Montoute, Acting Prime Minister of Saint Lucia and Her Ladyship the Hon. Dame Janice Pereira, DBE, Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court. Present at the opening ceremony was Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy GCSL, GCMG, D.ST.J, PH.D, LL.D (HON.), Governor General of Saint Lucia.
The faculty delivered a comprehensive programme which we are confident will enhance the skills of the judges, with a view to improving the administration of justice in our region. The faculty included proven experts in the areas and were the Honourable, Mr. Justice C Dennis Morrison, President of the Court of Appeal, Jamaica, The Honourable Mrs. Justice Alice Yorke-Soo Hon, Justice of Appeal Trinidad & Tobago, The Honourable, Mr. Justice Mark Mohammed, Justice of Appeal, Trinidad & Tobago, The Honourable, Miss, Justice Paula Mae Weekes, Retired Justice of Appeal, Trinidad & Tobago, The Honourable, Mr. Justice Iain Morley, QC, High Court Judge of the ECSC and Mr. Nigel Jones, Director of the Centre for Cybercrime Forensics, United Kingdom
At the end of the training the participants filled out evaluation forms which indicated the conference was a resounding success.
